Stop and Start

Midnight came and went and still he didn't sleep.

Ubiquitous porn played out on the screen in front of him, bland and familiar.

Lightening struck suddenly and it began to rain thick, electric streaks against his window.

Disillusioned, he slouched into the leather.

Everything had ended today: his partnership, his job, his remaining self-esteem, his hope.

Rum and a few drops of Coke sweating in a glass on his coffee table, he waited for nonexistent miracles.

...

Kinetic energy surged through him as he sped the car through the downpour.

Rain slapped his windsheld and Krycek squinted, taking the corner.

Yellow streetlights dotted the roadway, leaking sick puddles of tainted gold onto the asphalt.

City sounds were drowned by the storm.

Everything starts today, he thought as he pulled the car up to the dark apartment building.

Keeping the disk close under his jacket, he ran up the steps, eager breath ghosting into the night.
